HEATING THE POOL IN 2022

MELBOURNE FLORIDA, AQUA CAL POOL HEATER PERFORMANCE

When the night time temperatures drop into the 40's or God-Forbid, the upper 30's, we turn the pool heater OFF. It becomes almost impossible to keep it hot enough for physical therapy.

This year we turned it OFF in January and did not turn it back ON until February 17, 2022. We carefully watched the forecasts for when nighttime temps would only fall to 55 or higher. Finally we got a clear couple of weeks and turned the Heater ON.

For this sort of warm-up the electric heat-pump will need to run 24-7 so I removed the OFF stop on the mechanical timer which controls the water pump (which in-turn controls the heater).

MEASURING THE WATER TEMPERATURE

Note little black box hanging from drum stick = aquarium thermometer

Temperature probe hangs in the water beneath the thermometer

We found these aquarium thermometer sensors on Amazon. They are more reliable and tested more accurate than any of the so-called pool thermometers we tried (over a dozen models the first couple of years). These aquarium thermometers are not water proof so I suspended it from a drum stick under a protective stool. Mary stores her fins on the lower shelf to keep them away from ants.

THE RESULTS ARE IN

Start time = 7:30am, Heater OFF = 4:30pm following day, 33-straight hours running

On the index card of temperature readings you'll see it says 66-degrees as the starting temp. That is wrong, that was the starting temp on-the-heater display. All the other temperatures on this card are from the thermometer we have in the pool. This means the starting temperature was less than 65.3, I'd guess something like 64.3 since, as we'll see, the heater raises the cold water almost a full degree per hour once the sun is shining and ambient air temperature is mid-70's to low-80's.

HEATING ANALYSIS

The heater was able to raise the pool almost 1-degree per hour during daytime sunlight hours. The sun is all the way down around 6:30 and you can see the rate of increase slowed to a little more than .5-degrees per hour in the 6:30-8:30 time slot. Also keep in mind that the air temperature by 8:30pm is starting to drop and that takes a toll on the warming progress.

8:30pm - 8:30am (12-hour continuous run) = 6+ degrees of temperature increase even with the outdoor air temp dropping to lower 50's.

8:30am to 4:30pm = 8-straight hours of heating in daylight. The heater basically raised the pool water temperature 1-degree/hour. We shut it off at 4:30pm and I finally had my physical therapy session, ahhhhh wonderful warm water.

33-straight hours of running to heat the pool to 90-degrees.

If you compare the energy cost of heating our pool to the cost of physical therapy at a medical center this pool is a bargain and the results have been better than the therapists predicted. As long as I keep lifting weights and swimming I'm able to maintain full range of motion from my once paralyzed right-arm.

POWER USAGE ANALYSIS

I got the regular yearly maintenance done on the pool heater in January this year. Everything checked out well and it was the first time I got a chance to read the amperage since I reworked all the pump plumbing.

Repiping and eliminating right-angle piping inefficiencies lowered the amperage draw from 33-35 down to 26 amps with heater and compressor operating.

240-volts x 26-amps = 6240 watts or 6.24 kWh when heater is heating.

6.24 kWh x .12-cents /kWh = 75-cents per hour heating cost.

33-hours x .75-cents/hour = $24.50 to get the pool back up to 90.

NOW THAT THE POOL IS BACK TO HOT

The heater typically runs from 3:30am-7:30am to maintain temperature of around 88-degrees. During daylight hours with ambient temperature of 80+ degrees the heater can raise the temp to 90 at a rate of 2-hours/degree of increase. We usually like to do physical therapy around 7pm after the chickens are put to bed and all our farm chores are complete. Sometimes we do therapy at around 2pm.

THE POOL IS AWESOME

The swimming pool is our favorite toy. The pool is one of the primary reasons I was able to get my right arm moving again after fracturing my neck in three-places. Doctors and surgeons had no ideas or predictions, only experiments they could perform on me.

My amazing and beautiful partner Mary kept the faith and helped me every day to regain use of my right arm and to write and play some of the best music I've ever created. Her encouragement and help got me into the gym and pool to work on getting my body working again.

Real Love is amazing and more powerful than words!

#7 "LEAPER", NOT A HAPPY RACCOON TIL WE LET HER GO

AKA "Enda Enda" for her wild gyrations, crashing from one end of the trap to the other in desperate attempts to escape from the wonderful "County Line" live animal trap from Tractor Supply Company, the best place to shop for products for life out here :-)

Here she is, "Leaper", now residing in her new home in Southern Brevard County, Florida. She's happy now.

"Leaper", ready to leap for freedom and get outta this Tractor Supply County Line trap

This video answers the question, "Can raccoons run fast?"

and the answer is YES!

HINT: Switch player-speed to .25x and go to about 12 seconds into the video to study the "leap to freedom" in detail, it's a beautiful launch.

#6 "BIG BOY", 50-POUNDER RACCOON, GOOD BYE

This guy took us three nights to catch, he was not happy about it either.

"That's a 50-pounder" quote from Robert our exterminator, he does not like raccoons like we do.

This guy was heavy, you could tell by picking up the trap LOL

BECKS NON-ALCOHOLIC BREW, (80) 6-PACKS

FIXING THE SUPPLY CHAIN PROBLEM, LAY IN A STASH

We've had trouble acquiring our favorite beverage on a regular basis. It's been out of stock for over a month. Thankfully our beautiful friend Cindy at arranged for a "mother lode" of this fine German brew and now we have it safely stashed away in the garage.

Distribution problem solved.

BECKS, FOR NON-ALCOHOLICS ;-)

SHANNONS HOLE, CHICKENS CAN DIG REAL GOOD

Shannon and Dusty have been coming outside of their condo and enjoying more space. Shannon has learned to not fly out of their outdoor space or she gets put back in the condo. Today she dug this hole on a quest for worms, we call this kind of thing a "Glory Hole", nom nom nom nom nom says the chicken. This hole is almost big enough to swallow a full size bowling ball. Amazing.

Here it is, preserved for your viewing enjoyment.

RACCOON #5, "CRAWLSPACE", LEAVE OUR CHICKENS ALONE!

For the most part we've gone without much interference from raccoons for the last 10 months, ever since we did a major "tighten-up" on food sources laying around "out here".

Now, since unknown contractors have been clearing more and more land around our farm to build more $480,000 homes and $2,000/month apartments, raccoons roaming for a home have joined with the rats in overrunning our property at night.

We hate to move the little guys since they're already having problems with finding a secure place to live but when they are digging into our chicken aviarys, upsetting rat traps and generally causing havoc it ends here, right now, with the help of Tractor Supply Company (that is where we bought our wild animal trap).

Without further introduction here is RACCOON #5, AKA, "CRAWLSPACE". We caught him inside a chicken aviary last night and he's a repeat offender who got away the night before. Not this time, he is now vacationing in the wilds of South-West Brevard County, good bye Crawlspace, be safe!

MEET "CRAWLSPACE"

That's a damn good looking racon

PEAFOWL FAMILY FEB 2022

 8 HENS, 1 YOUNG MALE, 1 ADULT MALE +

This year the peafowl roaming our farm consist of 8 hens, 1 young male, and 4 adult males. It's now February so the males are becoming more territorial, it's less common to see all four peacocks hanging out with the main tribe.

Our young male (affectionately known as "Vesty" due to his black spotted chest turning from cream to black color) has been hanging out with the 8 ladies and practicing his display for when he's a BIG peacock lol.

Here they are, six hens and Vesty up on the roof with Mr P and two hens napping on the pool cage.

They like admiring themselves in the reflections on the second story windows.

RACCOON #4, "DIGGIE"

SHOULDN'T AUWTA DUG INTO OUR CHICKEN AVIARYS

This little guy repeatedly terrorized us by digging into the aviary areas of several of our chicken flocks. Fortunately the chickens are snug in their Formex chicken coops but we still don't like this guy coming and making a mess of food. He had to go. It took us two tries to get him but our second attempt snagged our little intruder. He got a ride over to the wilds of the South-West, to a nice new forest of plants.

When we opened the cage he ran free, very fast, in less than 2-seconds he was gone out of sight.

In the pickup, ready for his ride to his new home

POOL TEMPERATURE, IN WINTER

When we bought P2-farm back on Dec 4th, 2014 the pool was 68-degrees F. We had the new pool heater installed in March of 2015. The pool was still about 68-degrees.

EGG WEIGHTS AND 50-POUNDER DETAILED PICTURES

Lets look at egg weights. These are not guesses or internet data, this is right from our NOM Kitchen and these weights are from our "Legal Postal Scale".

EGGS FROM 14 BANTAM HENS AND 4 STANDARD SIZE GOLDEN-COMETS

Our 14 bantam hens and 4 standard size Golden-Comet hens have been very busy laying eggs.

Here's four-to-six days worth of laying.

50 POUNDER EGG

OK, it's not 50 pounds, it's just a Florida expression, but still, it's a BIG egg. The two on the right are full size eggs that barely fit in an egg box.

The one on the left is truly a LARGE egg. Our four Golden Comet chickens are working hard to be sure we've got plenty.

Without further ado, here it is, the big one, enjoy!

WINTER WEATHER TEMPERATURES

We're in our 8th year here at P2 and the weather continues to modulate, ebb and flow, like the sea.

In previous years we had our coldest temperatures in January and 2022 continued the trend with horrible, horrible cold weather :-)

In December of 2021 while enduring the remains of the pandemic we ran the pool heater and tried to swim at least every other day. Once we crossed into January, we decided to turn the pool off around Jan 10th because it was costing almost $20 a day to keep it warm. That sort of temperature load also puts a LOT of wear on the heater which is now in its 8th year here.

SEVEN LITTLE FLOCKS OF LITTLE CHICKENS

 WE LOVE OUR ROOSTERS

The problem with roosters is, what do you do with them? We don't eat our chickens so that was out. Nobody wants adult roosters even if they're super cute Bantam Silkies. We raised our roosters since they were one or two days old so we're bonded, we love them, even the ass-holes who peck and want to claw us with their feet.
