Ducks - December 2015

There was a time at P2 when we only had florida mottled ducks... but those days are gone.

Meet Mel, the mallard duck.  We've watched his head get greener and greener over the last few months, and he's looking very handsome now.  He puts on the green head for mating season.  Yes, he clearly thinks he's a florida mottled duck.  We're thinking of getting him a mirror...

The male and female Mergansers have really livened up the duck scene.  Their diving (versus the mottled duck dabbling) is amazing to watch, and they disappear under water for up to two minutes.  The new lens (and Mark's burgeoning photographer skills) have really captured their beauty.  The male is the one with the big black and white pope hat.

HOODED MERGANSER COUPLE COME TO P2 FOR THE WINTER

Every now and then something really amazing happens here at P2, today it was this fantastic mated pair of Hooded Merganser. These little ducks swim underwater and can stay down for two-minutes. They are polite citizens of the pond and don't cause any problems (except if you're a fish).

Male Hooded Merganser takes a peak underwater to see if there is anything yummy to eat.
