Wood Duckling vs Motted Duckling

We have "baby duck" living on the pond now, a duckling with no mother, and we were debating this morning on whether he was really a Wood Duck baby or if he was a Florida Mottled Duck or Mallard type.

As a differentiating characteristic, it comes down to the stripe over the eye and whether it goes all the way past the eye toward the beak, or JUST up to the eye.  Mallard/mottled has a stripe that goes all the way to the beak, wood duck has a stripe from the back, ending at the eye.

Our "baby duck"has a stripe that ends at the eye.  So he's clearly a wood duck.

Which is good, because we named him Warren:  Warren BD (baby duck), like Warren Beatty.  LOL :D

Mallard type duckling - Stripe past the eye

Wood duckling - stripe UP TO the eye

Wood Ducks 4-27-2019

Baby wood ducks!  We had a sighting, and then they were gone.  We both really wish they would stay, but it seems they're born here (or next door at Drew's), they swim in the pond, then they leave.

Mark took some great pictures (coming soon).

Add pictures here :D

Wood Ducks 4-19-2018

WE'VE GOT DUCKS! WOOD DUCKS! AWWWWWWWWWWWW...
Here they are on April 18th, the first day we saw them.

Another quick look at the baby wood ducks...  The second the mom saw me, she led the kids back to the safety of the tall grass.

Soon Mom flew off for a few minutes, so I walked over to see where she "deposited" the babies in the  tall grass.  She came back shortly, and as soon as she landed in the water she called the babies.  Here's the sound she made.  They quickly came to the mom wood duck once they heard her call, and the family was reunited.
