OUR LITTLE ANNA

 WE LOVE BIRDS

Anhinga drying her wings on the beach

Meet Anhinga, she's an amazing bird that flies magnificently, has claws to help her sleep in trees and she swims underwater, impaling fish on her spear-like beak before swallowing them whole on the shore of our private Florida lake.

That's Anna on her throne for the night

There's a problem though, Anna can't fly when her wings are wet so she spends a good amount of her daylight hours drying herself off so she can fly up to a tree somewhere to roost for the night.

Anhinga, in bed, she is over the water, that branch is about 1" in diameter

During the winter months Anna sleeps at here at P2, she perches on a skinny little branch. It's always the same branch, year after year.

Stop looking, she says "Angggghhh, annnggggghhh, anggghhhh" in low growly voice

Anhinga is very territorial, only one per property. If another Anhinga shows up there will be trouble. Male or female, does not matter, our Anna will defend her diner to the death and after several seasons, she is still with us.

Even though there is currently a 5-foot alligator in our lake Anna was in the water fishing with him today. We saw her emerge with a large panfish, only to see it get away and slip back into the water. She fearlessly dove in after it. Alligator, shmalligator, don't get in Annas way when she is hungry.

We feel honored our Anhinga friend chooses to live here at our Florida home.
