BABY WILD MUSCOVY DUCKS HATCHED FROM EGGS WE FOUND IN THE YARD

Our Muscovy friend, Ducky (check those yellow feet) made the two eggs Sky hatched

That's a darn good looking duck!

Our wild Muscovy duck friend (Ducky) laid some eggs but unfortunately raccoons got to her nest. Two eggs were left after the raccoon was done.

Mary took those two eggs and put them under a broody hen. Over the next 34 days the eggs were moved several times, they finally ended up under our broody Silkie hen named "Sky".

Sky stayed with the eggs and was very diligent in her duties of keeping them warm.

Today, day-34, both duck eggs hatched. We have two brand new, very fragile and weak baby Muscovy ducks. We moved the babies and mom to a box on the screened-in porch so we can keep an eye on them and prevent other chickens from disturbing them.

If you ever wondered if a duck can be hatched by a chicken the answer is YES! Definitely.

And now a new phase of our journey begins.

DAY 2 FOR BABY DUCKS (WHO ARE NOT ACTUALLY DUCKS LOL ;-)

Baby ducks made it through the night. They were so pathetic and weak after their escape from their capsules, we wondered a bit if they would make it. "Sky" their adopted Silkie hen mom was very careful to keep them warm in the 67-degree night air.

Our chickens which were raised under a broody mom are more well adjusted and not so flighty. They each had a wonderful mom to show them the way. Our latest flock of 14 baby chicks were very crazy because they had no mom.

Ducks and Chickens Oh-My

We took the five 1-week-old Speckled Sussex baby chicks and added them under "Sky" who hatched the baby ducks. We tried this unsuccessfully with several other chicken moms and they all rejected the new baby chickens.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE

ONE BABY DUCK IS UNDER HER WING

It took about an hour but finally Sky completely rejected the Speckled Sussex chicks. We moved them back into their brooder box with the bantam Buff Brahma baby chicks. Peace is restored
